The first Saturday of May is Free Comic Book Day where comic stores around the world giveaway Free Comic Books to get the word out to the public about the great comics that are available. Over 40 publishers and Diamond Comics Distributors made 56 free comic books for stores to giveaway this year. My local store Metropolis Comics in Bellflower CA was once again packed and the estimates were that over 1200 people total for the day showed up and there were some that lined up super early to get their free comics. Metropolis has a great subscription service and members were able to get to choose 6 free comics compared to non members who were able to get 3 free comics. Of course the best thing about Free Comic Book Day is to see all of the kids that are so excited to get free comics. The thing that I love about Free Comic Book Day is that if you get a kid to read a comic not only is it getting them to read but it lets their imagination loose. Getting kids to read now is very important and that is why Metropolis Comics makes sure that there are enough free comics to make sure that everyone gets some. The store opened at 10am and the line was out the door until about 3pm and seemed to never end. Myself, Debbie, James, and Monique manned the free comic book table and Bob and Ashly was checking customers out up front. Sonny was handling the new members sign up table. There were a number of people who showed up in costume and a lot of kids came dressed up also. While we did run out of some of the free comics with the Archaia hardcover being the most popular one and went the fastest when we finally left the store at around 6pm there were still some people stopping by and there were still some free comics for them. After a long day we had dinner and some of us went to see Spider-Man 2 in 3-D at a local theater to finish off a great day.
I have volunteered at Metropolis the last 5 years to help out and the thing that I love is seeing the kids come in and the excitement of getting free comics and that is why we all do it. Sure it’s great for the store to get new customers but if you can get a kid to read that is what is all about.

This is what the store looked like for most of the day and it was packed.
Brett C. Nance and May Bellamy were special guest at the store and did drawings and had their books and toys for sale.
Drew Johnson and Lori Hanson were super busy the whole day doing sketches.
Sonny signing up new members and I think he sprained his wrist with all of the writing that he did.
Here is the Devine Miss Debbie, Monique and James handing out the Free Comics.
Here are some of the excited kids that showed up. It was great to see so many of them and they always had a hard time choosing what Free Comic Books to get.
Here is one of the many raffle prize winners. She won this great Archie book and was really excited. Store Manager John Berry had separate drawing for both kids and adults. After this girl won her brother got upset because he didn’t win something so I quickly grabbed a few extra free comics to give to him and told him that he had won too and he was then super happy too. Their parents were thankful and I told them that we want everyone to be happy on Free Comics Book Day at Metropolis Comics.
Captain America stopped by to approve of Free Comic Book Day.
Scott Pilgrim’s Ramona Flowers dropped by to get some Free Comics too
Even the Golden Age Red Tornado Ma Hunkel flew in to get some Free Comic Books.
Metropolis Comics own Bob got into the cosplay acting.
Ashly held down the fort at the cash register that nearly burst into flame from the sales that day.
Nathan Drake was flanked by the girls of X-Men to make sure that no super villains caused trouble.
